WHAT IS QUENCHING?
Quenching is a heat treatment process, where the properties of the metal is changed. It is used to control the normal metallurgical transformation that occurs when metal is cooled, thereby producing the desired hardness. Metal objects are heated in an oven and submerged into an oil bath. The oil is circulated at a specific rate and temperature to achieve the desired results. By quenching the important factors are the properties of the steel, but also the properties of the oil, as this affects the end product.
There are two types of quenching, closed and open. In a closed system, objects are lowered directly from a chamber in a furnace into a quench tank by an elevator or conveyor, while in an open system, the oil bath is a separate process fed from an external conveyor or crane.
During quenching it is important that the oil is clean. This is to achieve cleaner processed parts. Quench oil is contaminated with carbon deposits, particles, sludge and water. The consequences are a lower quality of processed parts, higher production and maintenance costs and longer downtime than absolutely necessary.

Many users of oil do not realize their new oil really isn’t very clean. The ISO cleanliness code was developed by The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and is the primary piece of data analyzed at most test laboratories on industrial oil cleanliness reports. The value of each code can help determine the overall cleanliness of your oil/lubricating system. As a result of the analysis, end users will frequently establish a target code (value) to achieve, thus giving them an increased level of confidence if their used oil sample meets or exceeds this established target code.
Automatic Particle Counting (APC) is the most common method used by rest labs when analyzing oil samples for particle counting. When the sample goes through an APC, particles are counted either through pore blockage or laser methods. The laboratories will report the samples particle count micron levels. For example, these various micron levels will commonly include those greater than, 4, 6, 10, 14, 21, 38, 70 and 100 microns. So to break it down, they count the number of particles in a sample greater than 4 microns, greater than 6 microns and greater than 14 microns.
Typically new oil cleanliness has an ISO code of 20/19/16 (approximately). A typical sample from new bulk oil contains in every 100mL of oil:
FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO NEW OIL HIGHER ISO CODE
Although most oil manufacturing facilities work hard at keeping a clean environment, they still are not the cleanest. How clean are their blending and storage points? How clean are the hoses, pumps and storage drums?
Oil standards constantly relate particles of contamination to micron size. How can we relate to these contamination/micron sizes?
- 40 Microns visible to the naked eye
- 25 Microns visible with magnification
- 1 Micron = 1 Thousandth of a millimeter
- 1 Micron = 39 Millionth of an Inch
- 50-70 Micron = A single strand of human hair
Another fact to consider is the cleanliness of the sample bottles used to send a sample to the lab for analysis
Five random sample bottles were analyzed for cleanliness by HL-1185, HIAC Automatic Particle Counting using the SDS (Syringe Dispensing System). Reagent grade clean Heptane was the medium used to collect the contaminant in the bottle. Approximate 100 mLs of Heptane was placed in the bottle, up to the fill mark, agitated and counted. The average of two counts are reported.

Contamination
Contamination can take the form of insoluble materials such as metals, dust particles, sand, and rubber. The smallest particles are often responsible for defects, those below 2 µm, and better known as silt, resin, or oxidation deposits. Dirt holding capacity is the quantity of contamination retained by the filter insert when the saturation pressure is reached. This is measured in weight or volume. How much oil contamination a filter insert is capable of retaining is of highest importance for the cost of operating over a period of time. While most conventional pleated pressure filter inserts can retain less than hundred grams of dirt (<0.2 lbs.), they may be fairly inexpensive to replace. However, if the cost of removing 1 kg or pound of oil contamination is calculated, these conventional pressure filter inserts will suddenly appear quite expensive. A good quality cellulose based offline filter insert can retain up to several kg/lbs. of dirt, so even though the purchase price is higher, the calculated cost for removing one kg or pound of contamination will be considerable lower than that of a pleated pressure filter insert, giving lower lifetime costs.
