HOW CLEAN IS YOUR NEW OIL?

HOW CLEAN IS YOUR NEW OIL?

Many users of oil do not realize their new oil really isn’t very clean. The ISO cleanliness code was developed by The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and is the primary piece of data analyzed at most test laboratories on industrial oil cleanliness reports. The value of each code can help determine the overall cleanliness of your oil/lubricating system. As a result of the analysis, end users will frequently establish a target code (value) to achieve, thus giving them an increased level of confidence if their used oil sample meets or exceeds this established target code.

Automatic Particle Counting (APC) is the most common method used by rest labs when analyzing oil samples for particle counting. When the sample goes through an APC, particles are counted either through pore blockage or laser methods. The laboratories will report the samples particle count micron levels. For example, these various micron levels will commonly include those greater than, 4, 6, 10, 14, 21, 38, 70 and 100 microns. So to break it down, they count the number of particles in a sample greater than 4 microns, greater than 6 microns and greater than 14 microns.

Typically new oil cleanliness has an ISO code of 20/19/16 (approximately). A typical sample from new bulk oil contains in every 100mL of oil:

FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO NEW OIL HIGHER ISO CODE

Although most oil manufacturing facilities work hard at keeping a clean environment, they still are not the cleanest. How clean are their blending and storage points? How clean are the hoses, pumps and storage drums?

Oil standards constantly relate particles of contamination to micron size. How can we relate to these contamination/micron sizes?

  • 40 Microns visible to the naked eye
  • 25 Microns visible with magnification
  • 1 Micron = 1 Thousandth of a millimeter
  • 1 Micron = 39 Millionth of an Inch
  • 50-70 Micron = A single strand of human hair

Another fact to consider is the cleanliness of the sample bottles used to send a sample to the lab for analysis

Five random sample bottles were analyzed for cleanliness by HL-1185, HIAC Automatic Particle Counting using the SDS (Syringe Dispensing System). Reagent grade clean Heptane was the medium used to collect the contaminant in the bottle. Approximate 100 mLs of Heptane was placed in the bottle, up to the fill mark, agitated and counted. The average of two counts are reported.

PATRIOT OFFERS A SOLUTION – OFFLINE OIL CLEANING FINE FILTERS

With our CC Jensen Oil Cleaning Fine Filters, we have achieved cleanliness levels on totes of new oil down to ISO code 14/11/9. And significantly reduced the water content that was a result of storage and condensation.

What is offline filtration?

An offline filter system is one that is connected to your systems oil reservoir, outside of the main system, and cleans your oil 24/7 by slowly circulating a portion of the total volume of oil with multiple passes through a depth filter.

Commonly referred to as “kidney loop” filter because it operates similar to how our kidneys operate as the body’s filter, removing wastes and extra fluid from your body, slowly. At a rate of about 200 quarts of blood each day, the kidneys filter while maintaining a healthy balance of the chemicals that control acid levels.

Offline Filtration Diagram brought to you by Patriot Fluid Power

Our CC Jensen Oil Cleaning Fine Filters are offline depth filters for removal of the most common types of contamination sources: Particle, Water, Acid & Varnish. Built for all sizes of oil systems from ½ gallon to above 53,000 Gallons. CJC filters are installed offline, meaning system shutdown is not necessary when changing filter inserts. All CJC Filter inserts have a 3-micron absolute filtration ratio. They are produced of 100% natural cellulose fibers from sustainable resources – no metal, no plastic, no chemicals!

Remember, in-line filtration alone is insufficient! In-line filtration protects your oil system against larger particles, but CJC offline filters maintain your oil continuously clean and dry, free of also small and harmful particles using a constant pressure and flow. This is the best way to extend the lifetime of components and oil, minimizing breakdowns.
