ARE NAME BRAND OILS AND COOLANTS REALLY REQUIRED?

Today’s diverse manufacturing processes create decisions required regarding which type of lubricant to use based on overall applications. Predominately, the overall misconception is that a major brand product is the “go to” because of name recognition in the market within the world today. However, even the major brand products can bring obstacles, challenges, and potential increased costs.

For example, availability of material in a timely fashion, high cost of products, price increases given without proper notice. Furthermore, support of product (may take days or weeks to get testing completed or someone to visit). Potential for performance issues (provided a PM program is not in place already). Regardless of the product, issues can arise like how you maintain your car with oil changes every 10,000 miles.

One of our customers was using a major brand grinding oil product for years and thought it was “the best thing since sliced bread.” They had no idea what else existed in the marketplace until Patriot presented them with a high-quality, dependable replacement product. Their first initial reaction was, “Well I’ve been using this product for years, and I don’t believe there’s one that can replace it.” This is a common misconception amongst several manufacturers. Patriot provided a performance-based trial with the customer who responded very favorably.

Stories like this, are why we enjoy working with companies firsthand where we can introduce new products and processes that meet or exceed specifications of a major brand products. Patriot’s clean oil and coolant products can be used with reassurance of our continued support. We do our homework to ensure the switch will be simple and effective.

What are the benefits of our independent blended products?

  • Meets or exceeds major brand specifications (data drive decisions)
  • Custom blends to your specifications (synthetic, conventional, or blended) link
  • Generally, cost much less than major brand products
  • Faster availability of products (local inventory)
  • Local service and support
  • Testing and results received within days
  • Easy reordering

What are the ISO Codes and how does it affect your lubricants and clean oil?

The ISO cleanliness code was developed by The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and is the primary piece of data analyzed at most test laboratories on industrial oil cleanliness reports. The value of each code can help determine the overall cleanliness of your oil/lubricating system. As a result of the analysis, end users will frequently establish a target code (value) to achieve, thus giving them an increased level of confidence if their used oil sample meets or exceeds this established target code.

Automatic Particle Counting (APC) is the most common method used by rest labs when analyzing oil samples for particle counting. When the sample goes through an APC, particles are counted either through pore blockage or laser methods. The laboratories will report the samples particle count micron levels. For example, these various micron levels will commonly include those greater than, 4, 6, 10, 14, 21, 38, 70 and 100 microns.

A typical sample from new bulk oil contains in every 100mL of oil:

How does clean oil affect the life of your component?

The following table is a Life Extension Table – Cleanliness Level, ISO Codes

The table demonstrates the expected increase in the lifetime of components when the oil cleanliness is improved. Each quadrant represents comment/machine type:

  • Top left quadrant is for hydraulic components and diesel engines
  • Top right quadrant is for rolling element bearings
  • Lower left quadrant is for machines incorporating journal bearings, e.g. turbines and turbos
  • Lower right quadrant is for gear boxes and other components not covered by other quadrants
Oil Life Extension table by Patriot Fluid Power
In the table above, for example, the current oil cleanliness in a hydrualic system or diesel engine is found to be ISO 22/20/17 and the oil is cleaned to an ISO cleanliness code of 17/15/12, it can be expected that the lifetime of the hydraulic components is prolonged 4 times.
